What a fantastic week. My brother in law invited me to go with him up to Pecos again this year…providing I do the dutch oven cooking again. Sounds like a deal! Picked up my other brother in law at Hobby and the three of us took off.
Spent the week camping and enjoying the great beautiful outdoors. It was neat to end on Easter with the family and enjoying the week. Puts the day to day grind into perspective.
Left Monday to make it to Ozona (think small town 3 hours West of San Antonio on I-10) before heading down to Lake Amistad. On the way to Ozona there was a fantastic light show of lightning…at leas fantastic until the hail came. Shooter marble sized hail started pelting the car and Yak. I pulled over and wedged my car between 2 18 wheelers…no luck. I was worried it would break the windows…I was certain it was denting he heck out of the car. Decided to just drive through it….finally made it through…with only one visible dent to the car and kayak ok!
Spent the night in Ozona and headed south to Comstock then west to the farthest west boat ramp of Amistad. With all the rain the road was under a little water.

Drove threw these with ease…it was fun!
On the way saw a Rainbow promising great fishing.

Hit Comstock and drove West until we came here…and put in our boat.

Got to the boat ramp and packed up the little boat with all our crapola. Then to top it off added the 11’ Cobra Explorer. Could not get much more packed than the Camping/Fishing barge.

We went up the Pecos River 11 miles till it got really narrow….where all the white bass are spawning. We camped in a shallow cave in the side of the bank. Slept in cots under the overhang of the cave.

We had just set up camp and the heavens unloaded…It never rains in West Texas….except for today. Luckily we were dry as a bone under the cave overhang. Rained Hard--Houston Like Rain fro the whole day, for the So one day shot under the cave. Great time to sit and shoot the bull, talk through everything and enjoy the fact that we were completely dry in our camp. Just as fun as fishing....almost as fun at least. Great time just talking the bull. Check out the video of the rain comming down.

Luckily we were well stocked in food and dutch oven cooking. Well the day was shot…time to cook. Ribeyes, sweet corm, baked potato, and black berry cobbler. We had jambalaya, hash browns, peach cobbler and tons of other good eating! So shooting the bull under the fire was the first night.

Got up the next day to something completely different. Not a cloud in the sky and TONS of hungry fish. First cast…White bass. I was throwing a jointed rapalla.

Second cast…another White.

Then another…

Must have caught 25 or so in a one hour period. Over the course of the few days we caught our share of fish. Got to the point my arm was tired of pulling in whites. Here’s a pic of our boat and a school of 30 Whites casting distance.

Perfect area for a bit of wade fishing….

After a while we took a few pictures of the scenery….The river, yak, water, night, rapids…beautiful area.

There were tons of fossils there….this one was reoccurring…Looks like a back bone of some sort…maybe someone recognizes it.

Last day woke up from camp….

And headed down to the river. We had caught tons of White Bass….but that was it. Saw some Alligator Gar…but only caught a ton of Whites.
Sent one cast to the other bank and ran the Rapalla threw to current to my bank…BAM got a Hard hit but no pick up…..Sent the exact same cast and this time Hooked up. The fish was pulling line and going crazy. What a fight for a fresh water fish. No sleigh ride…but quite a nice fight finessing this fish to shore. Pulled in a 18” largemouth.

Had to measure the guy…Largest LMB I have caught yet. IT was a blast.

Caught a ton of fish the trip….all Whites and one LMB

Fillet some of them….released a LOT more to fight another day. Beautiful trip, great fishing, and even more beautiful outdoors. Really stopped and thought how beautiful the world is and the fingerprint of deity!

Not to leave the family completely out, we all packed up and drove to Conroe to Double Lake to camp with my wife and kids. They were VERY happy to be back together. Had not showered much last week but great to be reunited to play for 3 days as a Family too!
