Our ward has a pretty strong Scout program so I offered up the opportunity to go Surf Fishing and camping at HI.
Spent a night teaching them about rigging and how to surf fish and we set the date of Oct 26-27th to hit the salt.
Pulled up Early Friday afternoon to the slabs...Set up camp, and decided to try kayaking with a friend. First time Taking Hunter. Put a pdf on him and out we went. Water was like glass and we could see schools of mullet swiming by. The Maurader was a bit unstable with Hunter inside so we stayed anchored up and watched. Soon some dolphin came swimming abotu 10 feet from the yak busting the mullet. Hunter loved it.
Went back in and set up the tents and put out the long poles. First bite came about 8:30 before the rest of the Scouts showed up.....just Hunter and I there to bring the first bull red in.

Here's my favorite shot of my boy.

Finally got the red in and took a few pictures.

The rest of the scouts pulled up in force set up camp. I put out four poles and made some Beef stew in the Dutch Oven and we huddled around the fire telling stories. About 10:30 the pole went off.

After shifting the pole around to 3 or 4 Varsity Scouts they finally pulled in their first Bull Red.

Released them after taking a few pictures for the boys prosperity.

After pulling in the red we were all pretty tired, so I pulled the poles in and took a much needed sleep. Woke up to see the BTB group head out to launch just down the beach from us. Morning brought a little rougher surf, but nice for Fishing from the shore. With this many boys we put out 6 surf rods and had the boys monitor them, while playing football, soccer, frisby…you know boys!
Yakked out all the bait, and the first pole took off….Boys ran to the first pole like we were giving out cookies.

As they were looking at the scout fighting on the pole, a second pole took off screaming….it was funny they all just kinda looked dumbfounded like is it possible to have 2 on at the same time…A quick holler to man the pole and we were fighting 2 fish.Picture of the first fish:

and then there was the second fish. This one actually had some sea lice on it, so a good teaching moment about parasites…

Saturday morning was pretty hot, we ended up with 8 or so…the problem was keeping up with the bait delivery, plus the current picked up pretty dramatically and made it interesting.

No comment on this one…

Overall had a great trip, hopefully inspire some of these boys to pick up the hobby and become future stewards of our beaches. It was fun to camp the night with them, catch some fish, plus share it with my boy.
